Satya Jan/Feb The Case for Vegan Cats by Jed Gillen

Sep 10, Craig? I have a vegan dog. The author makes solid argument after solid argument in defense of feeding your furry loved ones dogs AND cats a vegan diet.

Are you sure?

I'm just curious weather my cats would actually EAT a vegan cat food. I'll buy it, and find out. At this moment, I reserve the moral sanction to continue to feed them meat based cat food, only so long as they refuse to eat the vegitarian stuff.

I'm still trying to get them used to the wet stuff. I also add a little extra water to it, the vegan stuff is a little too dry. But the more I read, the more I was determined to feed my new kitten now six months old a vegan diet. Naturally, there was friction at home over this, and lots of yelling. I had been responsible for bringing the kitten home in the first place, and I had paid the adoption fee; after I backed down, offered to feed the cat a raw-meat diet, and give away the remaining vegan kibble we have here, Richard relented, saying we might as well try the kitten on the vegan food, and see how he does.

Jed Gillen's single motivation in feeding his pets vegan diets as well as for his own veganism is ethical: to not be responsible for any animal having to suffer just to feed him. He considers the health and environmental benefits of not having to kill animals for food just fringe benefits to his main cause, asserting that, "I have said that I would remain vegan myself even if I were to find out that it were not the absolute best choice from the standpoint of my personal health. Would you feed your cat a vegan diet?

Gillen crafts a compelling argument for "veganizing" one's cat or dog. And he makes indisputable arguments, such as that the "prey drive" should never be considered a "need" to eat meat. I'm really happy that this book exists, and I'm going to order several more copies for people of the "your dog needs meat to live" school of thought—i.

The most unfortunate thing I see, though, is that a lot of omnivores flat-out refuse to read Obligate Carnivore ; this is sad, because it's an eminently readable and often funny book. And for me, the motivation to become vegan is still three-pronged; when I consider that animals are dying of heart disease and cancer in numbers that parallel the human population, I'm willing to try another way.

If you can maintain a dog or cat as well on a vegan diet for as long a life as on meat, it seems reasonable to try. And if there are enviromental benefits as well, that just makes it more of a compelling argument for me. First - this book is pages, not as is listed here on Goodreads. Because eating a meat-only diet provides some vitamins and fatty acids in their pre-formed state, cats and many other obligate carnivores have lost the ability to make these amino acids and vitamins in their own bodies the way herbivores or omnivores do.

They have little ability to form niacin from tryptophan. They have a high requirement for taurine, which is found almost exclusively in animal flesh. Arginine, also found in animal flesh, is so critical to the cat that a meal without it can lead to death. Fortunately, all meat sources have plenty.

Simply put, cats must eat meat to live.

The vocal support of a vegan diet for cats comes strictly from the vegan community itself. He states the following:. The animals we feed to our cats and dogs have been genetically manipulated, pumped full of hormones, confined, beaten, and murdered without ever having had a chance at a normal life.
